Nostalgia:The Internal Compensation Approach to Improve the Perceived Control

Abstract
Objective:Drawing upon the compensatory control theory,the present research explores the relationship and psychological mechanism between nostalgia and personal perceived control,and examines the internal compensation ap-proach of nostalgia to improve the perceived control.Methods:Study 1 examined the relationship between trait nostalgia and perceived control in the natural state.Study 2a and study 2b manipulated nostalgia through music and memories,re-spectively.Results:(1)Trait nostalgia was negatively correlated with trait control,and trait control negatively predicted trait nostalgia.(2)Both music-evoked and memory-evoked nostalgia enhanced personal perceived control,and this process was fully mediated by social connectedness.Conclusion:Individuals with low perceived control exhibit a higher tendency toward nostalgia.Nostalgia can improve the personal perceived control,and its psychological mechanism is the social con-nectedness.关键词
