Abstract

[Objective]The methods for seed storage are important part of the long-term seed preservation.This study aims to investigate the effect of freezing treatment on the germination potential and germination rate of sugar beet seeds with different moisture contents.[Methods]Polyembryonic diploid sugar beet seeds(Y3),polyembryonic diploid red beet seeds(R39),and monoemvryonic male-sterile sugar beet seeds(B1-3)were used as experimental materials.The original moisture content of the beet seeds(12%)was dried to 10%,8%and 6%,and germinated after freezing,to explore the effect of freezing treatment on the germination of beet seeds with different moisture content,and to find the optimal moisture content range for freezing storage of beet seeds.[Results]At the moisture content of 6%,the germination potential and germination rate of polyembryonic diploid red beet seeds(R39)were significantly different at the 5%level,compared to the control,with a reduction of 14.67 and 9.33 percentage points from the original water content(12%).No significant difference to other treatments was observed.There were no significant differences in germination potential and germination rate of the three categories of sugar beet seeds at 8%and 10%moisture contents.[Conclusion]In conclusion,freezing treatment of beet seeds with moisture contents ranged from 6%to 10%,and little influence on their germination potential and germination rate was observed.
