The Breeding and Application of New Sugarcane Varieties and Contribution to the Cane Sugar Industry in Yunnan

Abstract
Yunnan is China's second-largest sugarcane growing area,with a planting area of approximately 270 000 hectares.In the past 10 years,the average annual sugar production has been 2.037 million tons,accounting for over 24.0%of the national total,up from 19.5%in the 2014/2015 crushed season,with a highest record of 25.5%in the 2021/2022 crushed season.In 2024,the main sugarcane varieties promoted come from five provinces or regions including Yunnan,Guangdong,Guangxi,Taiwan,and Sichuan.Yunnan has the largest planting area of local varieties,reaching 153 000 hectares,accounting for 54.4%of sugarcane area in Yunnan.From the production and application trends of varieties from different provinces or regions,the promotion and application area of varieties developed in Yunnan has increased significantly,exceeding the sum of varieties developed in four provinces or regions.The'Xin Tai Tang'varieties has the fastest decline rate,the Guangdong varieties has gradually declined,the Guangxi varieties has slowly increased,and the promotion area of varieties developed in Sichuan has always been rare.The Sugarcane Research Institute,Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has achieved the greatest breeding achievements among the four breeding organizations in Yunnan,with 90.9%of registered varieties,99.1%production application area of self-cultivated varieties,and 54.0%of the total sugarcane planting area in the province.In 2024,the application area of'YZ081609'is the largest,with 122 000 hectares,accounting for 43.4%of the province's sugarcane planting area,creating a new record for the largest area and the highest proportion of a single variety in Yunnan's history.Due to the rapid promotion and application of high-yield and high-sugar YZ varieties,the sugar recovery of sugarcane in the province has continuously reached new record,rising from 12.43%in the 2014/2015 crushed season 10 years ago to over 13.0%,and reaching historical high of 13.28%in the 2022/2023 crushed season.It is suggested to rely on the rich sugarcane germplasm resources in Yunnan,strengthen parental innovation,cultivate breakthrough and mechanized new sugarcane varieties,and make greater contributions to the development of the sugar industry.关键词
