Bibliometric analysis of the top 100 highly cited papers in the field of stroke MRI research

Abstract
Objective:By analyzing the top 100 highly cited papers in the field of stroke MRI research using bibliometric methods,to explore the current state,hotspots and frontier trends of MRI in the context of stroke studies.Methods:The papers related to MRI and stroke in the Web of Science Core Collection(WoSCC)database up to February 2,2024,were retrieved,and the 100 most frequently cited papers were included.Tools such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for analyzing publication amount,country and institution distribution,international collaborations,co-cited references,co-occurring keywords,and emerging keywords.Results:The top 100 highly cited papers were published between 1991 and 2020,showing significant publication trend fluctuations with the highest amount in 2003 and following a bimodal distribution pattern,peaking in annual citation frequency in 2020.A total of 784 authors were involved,with 65 core authors identified according to Lotka's law,among which Warach and Parker held central positions in the author collaboration network.Harvard University led with 11 publications,followed by seven institutions tied for second place including University of Pittsburgh.The analysis of the distribution of countries co-publishing showed the United States maintaining a leading position and international influence in MRI and stroke research with significant publication amount and collaboration network density.The dual-map overlay function of CiteSpace software revealed high citation frequency and close associations between fields such as medicine,biology,and immunology.Through co-occurrence keywords network analysis,three major themes in current neuroscience research and clinical application were unveiled as neuropathology,neuroimaging technology application,and cognitive function and rehabilitation,showcasing the central role of neuroimaging technology in understanding brain function,diagnosing and treating neurological diseases,and promoting neurological recovery.Conclusions:MRI technology is on an upward trend in stroke research,especially in the diagnosis of stroke,assessment of therapeutic efficacy,and personalized,objective,and precise analysis of neural injury and repair mechanisms.Research focuses include the combined application of resting-state,task-state MRI with PET-CT technologies,and the innovative studies and application of new technologies across multidisciplinary fields.Through a comprehensive analysis of highly cited literature,this study reveals the research hotspots and frontier trends in the application of MRI within the stroke field,providing important references for future research directions.Additionally,the study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge flow,particularly the close connection between medicine,biology,and neuroscience,offering new perspectives and tools for a deeper understanding of brain function,disease mechanisms,and their treatment.关键词
