Population origin, damage characteristics, and migration pathways of the oriental armyworm Mythimna separata in Northeast China
摘要
Abstract
The oriental armyworm,Mythimna separata,is a major migratory pest in Northeast China.Prior to 2012,outbreaks were mainly attributed to second-generation larvae. However,a large-scale a major third-generation outbreak in 2012 marked a shift in pest dynamics, with recurring outbreaks and increasing severity in the years that followed. This review proposes a migration-based hypothesis for M.separata in the region and summarizes the source populations, damage patterns, and potential migration destinations.M.separata cannot overwinter in Northeast China;spring populations originate from long-distance migration.First-generation moths arrive from eastern China between May and June and estab-lish populations in Northeast China,Japan, and Korea, giving rise to second-generation larvae that damage crops in June-July.The third generation emerges in July-August,originating from both local and incoming populations.Early instars feed primarily dense vegetation such as millet and grasses, while later instars move to crops like maize, causing significant damage. The return migration of second-and third-generation moths remains debated.Future research priorities include cross-border migration monitoring and mechanisms underlying return flights.关键词
