Abstract

The genus Pyemotes(Acariformes:Pyemotidae)comprises a group of globally distributed ectoparasitic mites that parasitize a wide range of insect hosts,including species from the orders Coleop-tera,Lepidoptera,Hymenoptera,Hemiptera,Isoptera,and Orthoptera.Adult females(158-346 μm in length)possess extraordinary host-killing capabilities(one individual can lethally parasitize hosts weighing 166 000 to 680 000 times its own body mass),making them highly promising candidates for biocontrol pest control.To date,a total of 27 species of Pyemotes have been formally described,of which 18 belong to the P.ventricosus group and nine to the P.scolyti group.This review systematically summarizes the global and domestic research progress on Pyemotes,focusing on their morphological characteristics,taxonomy,geographical distribution,biological traits,applications in pest management,and potential risks.Key challenges in Pyemotes research are also discussed,including the difficulty of morphological identification due to their minute size,complexities in species classification,and their potential to cause dermatitis in humans.Finally,we highlight future research directions and the pros-pects for the application of Pyemotes in sustainable pest control strategies.
