Abstract

To elucidate the oviposition preference and host adaptability of oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis to four major fruit species in northern China(peach,apple,pear,and pomegranate),banana was used as a control to assess oviposition selectivity and its influence on larval development.The results demonstrated significant differences in oviposition behavior across fruits.Larval numbers were consis-tently higher on fruit slices than on intact fruits.Among whole fruits,peach and apple attracted the high-est number of larvae(91.33 and 89.17,respectively),while pomegranate had the fewest.For fruit slices,banana and apple supported the most larvae(188.49 and 161.01),while pear supported the fewest.Bac-trocera dorsalis completed larval development on all tested fruits.Larvae feeding on peach exhibited the best development.with the shortest larval period(10.41 d),highest pupal weight(11.70 mg),and highest eclosion rate(92.58%).In contrast,larvae feeding on apple showed the poorest performance,with the longest larval development duration(16.74 d),lowest pupal weight(8.03 mg),and lowest eclo-sion rate(69.36%).Collectively,these findings suggest that B.dorsalis can oviposit and develop nor-mally on all four fruits,with peach being the most suitable and apple the least.Additionally,wounded fruits were more attractive for oviposition,highlighting the need for enhanced monitoring and reduced fruit damage in orchard management to mitigate infestation risk.
