Abstract

To clarify the biocontrol potential of the predatory stink bug Eocanthecona concinna against taro caterpillar Spodoptera litura,the predation capacity,searching efficiency and intraspecific interfer-ence of 5th-instar nymphs and male and female adults were compared under two conditions:indoor(in Petri dishes)and outdoor(on tobacco plants,Nicotiana tabacum).The results showed that,in both envi-ronments,the functional responses of all predator stages to 3rd-instar S.litura larvae followed the Hol-ling type II model.While the actual predation rates were slightly higher indoors than outdoors at the same prey density,the difference was not statistically significant.Predatory performance ranked as fol-lows:indoor females>indoor males>indoor nymphs>outdoor females>outdoor males>outdoor nymphs,with respective control efficiencies of 10.546,10.093,9.247,8.345,6.939,and 6.906.The highest instantaneous attack rate(1.139)occurred in indoor females,while outdoor nymphs had the shortest handling time(0.085 d)and the highest daily maximum predation(11.77).Predation increased with prey density but search efficiency declined.Intraspecific interference was evident,as individual predation rates decreased with increasing predator density.These findings indicate that both nymphs and adults of E.concinna are effective predators of S.litura,with slightly reduced efficiency under out-door conditions.
