Seven Metaphors:Fundamental Ideas of Tesnière's Theory of Structure-function Syntax
摘要
Abstract
Whether it is cognition of the world or interpersonal communication,the beginning and destination of language expression and understanding are semantics,and semantic structure is the essence of syntactic structure.Compared with American distribution-descriptivism,Tesnière's structure-function syntax theory is more suitable for mandarin Chinese analysis.This article draws seven metaphors from Éléments de Syntaxe Structurale(1959)to illustrate his theory.The first one is syntactic correlation and chemical reaction;the second one is word function and military hierarchy function;the third one is semantic correlation core and circular sphere;the fourth one is verb sentence structure and performance of little drama;the fifth one is verb dominance and hooked atom;the sixth one is combined marking and cement;the seventh one is gathering facts and finding wealth.With the help of these seven metaphors,we can further understand Tesnière's theory of structure-function syntax or the three principles of syntax(correlation,jonction,and translation),clarify some misunderstandings in the past,and advance the study of semantic syntax.关键词
