Integrated optimization of train timetable and rolling stock circulation with flexible composition strategies for an urban rail transit line

Abstract
In urban rail transit systems,flexible train composition technology enables dynamic adjustments to train lengths,effectively addressing the uneven passenger demand distribution while reducing the operational costs of railway companies.This study focused on a bi-directional urban rail line with multiple depots,operating under flexible train composition modes and time-dependent passenger demand conditions.The trains were permitted to(un)couple only at turnaround stations.The complex operational processes associated with these(un)coupling actions were analyzed,alongside the nonlinear relationship between train supply and passenger demand.A nonlinear integer programming model was developed to minimize both train operation and passenger waiting costs,incorporating constraints related to operational safety,composition requirements,depot capacities,and passenger demand assignment.By introducing intermediate auxiliary variables,this nonlinear model was transformed into a mixed-integer linear programming formulation,which was then solved using the commercial solver Gurobi.Using the Batong Line of the Beijing Subway as a case study,the proposed method was compared to both the fixed composition mode,the two-type composition mode,and the semi-flexible mode that allowed adjustments only at terminal stations.Results indicate that,compared to the fixed composition mode and the two-type composition mode,the proposed approach can reduce the number of the used train units by 33.11%and 28.33%,the train operation costs by 30.42%and 26.48%,and the passenger waiting costs by 78.90%.When compared to the semi-flexible mode,it can reduce the number of the used train units by 23.60%,the train operation costs by 21.15%,and the passenger waiting costs by 78.93%.The primary advantage of the flexible composition mode lies in its ability to enhance rolling stock circulation efficiency through dynamic adjustments,thereby improving the alignment between passenger demand and train supply.In contrast,the fixed composition mode lacks this adaptability,while the semi-flexible mode does not permit changes at intermediate stations.These findings can offer valuable insights for further optimizing train operation plans and enhancing passenger service levels.关键词
