Name and Reality Issues of Cupressus austrotibetica and Conservation Suggestions

Abstract
Cupressus austrotibetica is a critically important Class I protected wild plant in China.However,the Chinese name of Cupressus austrotibetica has not been uniformly standardized within academic circles or widely recognized by the public,leading to confusion between its nomenclature and actual identity.This ambiguity hinders effective research and conservation efforts.This study addresses the nomenclatural confusion and insufficient protection strategies for Xizang cypress through an integrated approach combining specimen analysis and MaxEnt modeling.The results indicate the following:(1)The term"Xizang cypress"was initially applied to C.torulosa but referred to C.austrotibetica at the time.Subsequent taxonomic studies reveal that C.torulosa is distributed in western Nepal and does not occur in China,whereas C.austrotibetica is endemic to southeastern Xizang,specifically in Bomiyigong.Given the historical precedence,widespread recognition,and natural distribution of"Xizang cypress"in Xizang,we propose that this name be reserved for the original entity,C.austrotibetica.(2)The current suitable habitat of C.austrotibetica is predominantly located in the middle and lower reaches of the Parlung Zangbo River in southeastern Xizang.Under future climate scenarios,this species is projected to exhibit a heterogeneous expansion pattern characterized by concurrent high-altitude migration and low-altitude retreat.This dynamic will likely result in increased habitat fragmentation and heightened risks of decline for marginal populations.Key environmental factors influencing the distribution of C.austrotibetica include the maximum temperature of the hottest month(bio5),the mean temperature of the driest quarter(bio9),and the gravel content in the upper soil layer(t_gravel),which collectively account for a cumulative contribution rate of 83.5%.(3)Based on these findings,this study proposes a comprehensive conservation strategy encompassing the establishment of a germplasm resource bank to safeguard genetic diversity,implementation of habitat protection via ecosystem restoration initiatives,delineation of a dynamic network of climate refugia for enhanced protection,intensification of scientific research and monitoring efforts,investigation of artificial propagation techniques,and standardization of information dissemination protocols.These measures aim to provide a robust scientific foundation for the sustainable conservation and resource utilization of this endangered tree species.关键词
