Application of Passive Magnetorheological Dampers in Vibration Control of Stay Cables in Actual Bridges

Abstract
[Objective]As the span of cable-stayed bridges increases,vibration control of stay cables has attracted significant public attention.Currently,passive damping solutions are commonly used,but they require optimized damper designs for dif-ferent cables and vibration modes,resulting in poor compatibility between vibration modes.[Methods]To address this is-sue,a passive magnetorheological(MR)damper-based vibration control strategy was proposed,which leveraged the adjust-ability of smart devices.By modifying the internal magnetic field of the damper,the same device could achieve optimized de-signs for multiple vibration control targets.[Results]Using a typical single-rod MR damper as an example,its internal struc-ture and working principles were elucidated.A physical model of the MR damper's control force was established based on par-allel-plate fluid theory,and a numerical model of a controlled stay cable coupled with the MR damper was developed.Unlike existing linear equivalent force models,this refined force-electricity model fully accounted for the nonlinear characteristics of the MR damper's control force.Numerical simulations identified the optimal operating currents for the first three vibration modes.[Conclusion]The results demonstrate the modal compatibility of the passive MR damping strategy in vibration con-trol.This research provides an advanced and effective method for flexible stay cable structures,offering both theoretical signif-icance and practical value.关键词
