Abstract

In an attempt to investigate the impacts of oligomeric proanthocyanidins(OPCs)on the growth performance,feed utilization,and antioxidant capacity of Micropterus salmoides,600 healthy,disease-free Micropterus salmoides specimens,each weighing(8.65±0.05)g,were carefully selected.These fish were then randomly assigned to five distinct groups,with each group comprising three replicates.The control group was fed basal diet,while the experimental groups were provided with the basal diet supplemented with 200,400,600,800 mg/kg of OPCs.The feeding experiment lasted for 56 days.The results demonstrated that in comparison to the control group,supplementing the diet with 400-600 mg/kg of OPCs significantly enhanced the growth performance and feed efficiency of Micropterus salmoides.Additionally,it increased the crude protein content in the muscle(P<0.05).When 400 mg/kg of OPCs was added,the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD)in both the serum and liver increased significantly(P<0.05).Concurrently,the level of malondialdehyde(MDA)decreased significantly(P<0.05),and the activity of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)in the serum also rose significantly(P<0.05).At an addition level of 600 mg/kg of OPCs,the activities of catalase(CAT)in the serum and liver were notably elevated(P<0.05).Moreover,the activity of GSH-Px in the liver increased significantly(P<0.05).When 400 and 600 mg/kg of OPCs were added,the levels of total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)in both the serum and liver were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05).At the gene expression level,adding 400 and 600 mg/kg of OPCs significantly upregulated the expressions of SOD,CAT,and Nrf2(P<0.05)while downregulated the expression of Keap1(P<0.05).In conclusion,appropriate supplementation of OPCs in the diet can remarkably improve the growth performance,feed efficiency,and antioxidant capacity of Micropterus salmoides(P<0.05).The optimal addition range is 400-600 mg/kg.
