Relationship between social desirability and mental health of primary school students:A moderated mediating model

Abstract

Objective:To analyze the relationships among social desirability,peer relationships,self-consciousness,and mental health.Methods:A total of 1,030 primary school students from grades 2 to 6 were investigated using the Children's Social Desirability Scale,Children's self-concept Scale,Mental Health Scale,and the Peer Nomination Method.Results:① Without considering other mediating variables,children's social desirability negatively predicted the mental health of primary school students(β=-0.30,P<0.001);② After adding self-consciousness as a media-ting variable,the influence of children's social desirability on the mental health of primary school students was not significant,and self-consciousness played a full mediating role between social desirability and mental health(β=-0.56,95%CI=-0.94~-0.75),with a mediating effect value of-0.31;③The peer relationship of primary school students had an impact on the influence of social desirability on self-consciousness(β=-0.06,P<0.05),the worse the peer relationship of primary school students,the greater the influence of social desirability on their self-con-sciousness,and the peer relationship played a moderating role in the influence of social desirability on mental health through self-consciousness(β=-0.10,P<0.001),as the peer relationship declined,the mediating effect of self-consciousness increased,and the moderated mediating effect value was 1.17.Conclusion:Students with high social de-sirability and strong peer relationships are able to develop a higher sense of self-consciousness,which can help re-duce mental health problems.
