Effects of Biochar on Photosynthetic Parameters and Physiological Characteristics of Coffee Seedlings under Drought and Rehydration Conditions

Abstract

Seasonal drought is a major climate feature of Yunnan Province and one of the main limiting factors for coffee production.To clarify the effects of biochar on the photosynthetic parameters and physiological characteristics of Arabica coffee(Coffea arabica L.)under drought stress,a pot experiment was conducted with continuous drought and rehydration after biochar was applied.The results showed that after mild drought stress(DL period,no watering for 9 days)and rehydration,the coffee seedlings were able to recover.Compared with those in the W1 treatment(normal irrigation),the relative water content(RWC)of leaves in the D1 treatment(continuous drought,no biochar)decreased by 63.5%,the net photosynthetic rate(Pn)and stomatal conductance(Gs)decreased by 114.6%and 89.8%,respectively,and the soluble sugar content of leaves de-creased by 33.2%,whereas the contents of proline(Pro),malondialdehyde(MDA),and superoxide dismutase(SOD)increased by 2 353.7%,199.4%,and 385.5%,respectively.The application of biochar significantly alleviated drought stress in coffee seedlings.During the DS period,compared with the D1 treatment,the D2 treatment(continuous drought,biochar applied at 5% of the dry soil weight)had an RWC increase of 59.1%,the soluble sugar content in leaves increased by 21.1%,and the Pro,MDA,and SOD contents decreased by 64.2%,74.1%,and 11.9%,respectively.Three days after rehydration following severe drought stress(DS+R period),compared with those under the D1 treatment,the RWC under the D2 treatment increased by 40.8%,the Pn and Gs increased by 3.7 μmol·m-2·s-1 and 1 200%,respectively,the soluble soluble sugar content in the leaves increased by 20.5%,and the Pro,MDA,and SOD contents decreased by 853.1%,65.1%,and 70.7%,respectively.Under con-tinuous drought and rehydration,coffee plants treated with biochar survived,and their photosynthetic parameters and contents of antidrought physiologically active substances improved significantly.The application of biochar for the drought-resistant cultivation of mountain coffee in Yunnan is worthy of further exploration.
