Abstract

To systematically review the effectiveness of ecological operation experiments conducted since 2019 in addressing al-gal blooms in the tributary bays of the Three Gorges Reservoir and further support the scientific implementation of ecological oper-ations,we summarized the research findings on the ecological operation mechanisms of algal bloom control in the Three Gorges Reservoir.We simulated the ecological operation scenarios implemented in 2019,2021,2022,and 2024,and analyzed indicators such as reservoir inflow,outflow,and water level fluctuations,and evaluates changes in chlorophyll-a and the mitigation of algal blooms in the Xiangxi River and Xiaojiang River.The results indicated that when the water level fluctuation amplitude of the Three Gorges Reservoir exceeded±1 m/d,the effect of algal bloom suppression was significant.Among the four ecological operation ex-periments,except for the 2022 experiment where insufficient inflow prevented the ideal water level fluctuation amplitude of±1 m/d and led to a rebound of algal blooms,the other three experiments achieved favorable outcomes,with algal blooms largely sub-siding after the ecological operations.Further in-depth studies are required to examine the coupling effect of meteorological and water environmental factors on algal bloom dynamics during ecological operations,as well as the feasibility of implementing such operations during the reservoir's drawdown and impoundment periods.
