Abstract

Mountain rack railways are an emerging form of rail transit in China,with the first demonstration project currently under construction.However,systematic design and application research on rack rail turnout equipment remain limited.Based on the configurations and technical parameters of existing rack railway lines in China,this study proposed engineering design principles for the rack turnout system in mountain rail transit.Taking the No.7 single turnout with 50 kg/m rail and 1 000 mm gauge as an example,a feasible structural design and an overall layout scheme for a covered separable rack rail turnout were proposed by integrating the traditional wheel-rail turnout structures with rack rail configurations and parameters.Then,the detailed design of the structure and parameters of the turnout and movable rack rails was completed.For specific rack rails such as bifurcated and movable types in the turnout zone,a three-dimensional finite element model was established under actual constraints,and modal and vibration mode analyses were performed.Finally,the mechanical properties of the special rack rails in the turnout zone under different meshing conditions with ultimate service loading were explored.The research results showed that:(1)the total length parameters of the rack rail turnout needed to be coordinated with the rack rail and pitch.Taking the No.7 single turnout as an example,the total length was 19 200 mm,the front length was 9 556 mm,and the back length was 9 644 mm.(2)The rack rails in the turnout zone must be designed with a gradual transition around the turnout of straight and side tracks,and a segmented separable design at the intersections of rack rail and rail to ensure proper meshing of gear teeth across different tracks.(3)The maximum stress,maximum deformation,and bolt stress of the rack rails in the turnout zone met the safety design requirements under the extreme loading from the traction gears of the rack rail vehicles.This type of rack rail turnout has been applied to China's first rack rail test line.The rack rail vehicle maintains optimal gear-to-rack rail meshing during track switching,ensuring safe and smooth operation.
