Epidemiological Report on 512 Cases of Glaucoma in Dogs and Cats
摘要
Abstract
To explore the relationship between glaucoma incidence in dogs and cats and their breed, age, medical history, clinical symptoms, and treatment strategies in China, this study investigated 512 cases of glaucoma diagnosed at veterinary hospitals under the New Ruipeng Pet Healthcare Group Co.,Ltd.Statistical analyses were conducted on breed, gender, age at diagnosis, medical history, ocular abnormalities, treatment regimen, and treatment duration.Among the 512 cases,355 were dogs with glaucoma(433 affected eyes)and 157 were cats with glaucoma(179 affected eyes). The highest breed-specific incidence was observed in Poodles[25.9%(92/355)]and Chinese garden cats[28.0%(44/157)].The peak onset age was 6 years and 1 month for dogs and 3 months for cats.Akita showed a significantly higher tendency toward bilateral glaucoma compared to Poodles(P<0.05).The most common predisposing conditions were a history of cataracts in dogs(23.46%,38/162)and trauma in cats(18.64%,11/59).Apart from abnormal reflexes, glaucoma in cats is more commonly characterized by eyeball enlargement(52.0%,93/179),whereas in dogs, corneal edema is the predominant manifestation(38.3%,166/433).Additionally,the proportion of dogs with concurrent cataracts(18.2%,79/433)is higher than that of cats(3.9%,7/179).Antiglaucoma eye drops were the most frequently used treatment for both species, while enucleation was commonly the terminal surgical treatment for cats with glaucoma.Linear regression analysis revealed that optic disc cupping had a significant positive effect on treatment duration(regression coefficient=120.89,P<0.05).These findings indicate a higher bilateral glaucoma risk in Akita, and secondary glaucoma is more likely in dogs with cataracts and cats with ocular trauma.Thorough diagnostic evaluation and adherence to treatment may help delay glaucoma progression.关键词
