Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the regulatory effects of the supplementation of Astragalus polysaccharide(APS)on feed intake,locomotion and reproductive performance of Simmental cattle exposed to cold stress in winter in Northeast China.Eighty healthy Simmental cattle was randomly divided into four groups,each containing 20 cattle:a control group fed with base ratio and three experimental groups fed with a low,medium and high APS supplementation ration(supplemented with 0.5,1.0,and 1.5 g APS/kg feed,respectively).The trial lasted 180 d and the parameters of average daily feed intake(ADFI),average daily activity duration(ADAD),serum biochemical indices,and reproductive performance were measured.The results showed that the supplementation of Astragalus polysaccharide significantly affected the ADFI and ADAD and the high APS supplementation group exhibited the best ADFI(11.38 kg)and ADAD(6.34 h),significantly higher than those in the control group and other two experimental groups(P<0.05).Antioxidant factor levels,immunoglobulin levels,and reproductive hormone levels were significantly elevated in all three experimental groups than those in the control(P<0.05).Furthermore,conception rate,postpartum to first mating interval and its conception rate in three experimental groups were significantly higher than those in the control(P<0.05),among which,the high APS supplementation group showing the best of 78.6%,45.2 d and 65.0%,respectively.This study demonstrates that APS supplementation in the ratio of cattle would mitigate the dropped reproductive performance by cold stress in Simmental cattle by enhancing energy intake and activity,strengthening antioxidant capacity and immune function,and optimizing reproductive hormone secretion.
