Characteristics and removal of suspended solids in an industrial recirculating aquaculture system for eel

Abstract
The objectives of this study are to understand the basic characteristics of suspended solids in eel(Anguilla rostrata)culture water from an industrial recirculating aquaculture system(RAS)and to quantitatively study the removal performance of the suspended solids by a tailwater reuse system in which a horizontal sedimentation tank is the pretreatment unit and fiber filtration is the core process.The changes in particle size and concentration of the suspended solids in an eel RAS located in Fuqing,Fujian were analyzed throughout the day.The results showed that particle size distribution,suspended solid concentration,and water turbidity changed relatively little throughout the day but were significantly affected by the body size of cultured eels.The average particle size(D50)ranged from 69 μm to 113 μm,and the mean concentration of suspended solids and water turbidity were 70-181 mg·L-1 and 45-76 NTU,respectively.This implied that the water from eel RAS was a type of water with high solid content.The suspended solids contained high level of volatile matter(66.39%),and the contents of nitrogen,phosphorous,and organic matter in the suspended solids reached 35.12,14.01 mg·g-1,and 242.26 mg·g-1,respectively.When retaining in water,nitrogen,phosphorous,and organic matter could be released from the suspended solid to water.After soaking the suspended solids in deionized water for 3 h,the concentrations of total nitrogen,total phosphorous,and permanganate index in aqueous solution were detected to be 23.63,8.29 mg·L-1,and 33.70 mg·L-1.Thus,an endogenous pollution was formed,increasing water contamination load.After the aquaculture water was treated by the tailwater reuse system,the particle size of the suspended particles was significantly reduced.The reuse system exhibited excellent removal performance for suspended particles,the removal rates of which at 5:00 and 13:00 reached 96.36%and 97.48%,respectively.关键词
