Analysis of soil respiration carbon emission characteristics and main influencing factors in the new drawdown area of the wetland at the head of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

Abstract
As the water source for the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project(MR-SNWD),the Danjiangkou Reservoir has experienced expanded drawdown zones since its first full-capacity operation in 2021.However,the soil CO2 emission patterns and driving mechanisms in the newly formed drawdown areas re-main poorly understood,particularly under combined natural and anthropogenic disturbances.In this study,we investigated the soil CO2 effluxes through field observations across 7 sites(21 plots)in the head wetland of MR-SNWD during the non-flooded period in 2023.The results showed:(1)The annual soil CO2 emission in the drawdown areas averaged(18.79±3.50)t·hm-2,with the efflux rates peaking on August 23(4.056 μmol·m-2·s-1)during the growing season and declining as the water level rose rapidly in late summer.(2)Moisture was the primary driver of soil respiration in the mid-to-high elevation areas and adjacent non-flooded secondary forest,where CO2 fluctuations closely tracked humidity changes.(3)In low-elevation areas,soil respiration was primarily controlled by soil temperature and vegetation type,with no significant drought-induced limitations.As the first field observation of soil CO2 fluxes in the drawdown areas of Danjiangkou Reservoir,this study reveals how artificial water regulation and environmental factors jointly shape carbon emissions in large reservoirs.The findings provide critical insights for the study of ecological restoration and sustainable management of vulnerable interface ecosystems.关键词
