Abstract

Precipitation data from May to September 2019-2023,collected from national meteorological stations(national stations)and regional automatic meteorological stations(regional stations)in Xinjiang,were used to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of the two types of stations in describing precipitation characteristics in the region.The results show that:The correlation between precipitation at national and regional stations is significant.During the summer half-year,the average precipitation of regional and national stations is 103.2 and 89.0 mm,respectively,and the maximum precipitation is 451.2 and 395.7 mm,respectively.The average monthly maximum precipitation of regional and national stations is 67.4 and 56.3 mm,respectively,with peak values reaching 335.5 and 167.6 mm,respectively.The average precipitation at regional stations tends to be higher than that at national stations,and the skewness of the precipitation distribution is more pronounced at regional stations.The precipitation at regional stations is distributed in bands along the mountain system,whereas national stations are more sparsely distributed in mountainous areas.The precipitation concentration intervals are consistent between the two types of stations,however,national stations are less effective at capturing the discrete and localized nature of precipitation,particularly in the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation events of less than 25 mm and more than 100 mm.The spatial distribution of extreme precipitation events in Xinjiang is closely related to the topography,with national stations higher than regional stations in the basin and the opposite in the mountains.The difference in precipitation levels between the two types of stations is significant under different terrain conditions,with regional stations having an advantage in complex terrain areas with large elevation differences.Regional station data can monitor more frequent and intense extreme precipitation events,offering more refined real-time information for forecast prediction and disaster prevention and mitigation services.
