Abstract

Based on conventional meteorological observation data and new vertical detection systems,such as wind profile radar and lidar,this study analyzes the evolution characteristics of a strong sandstorm event in Hami City on April 12-14,2024.The results show that:(1)The recession of the European ridge at 500 hPa promotes the rapid eastward and southward movement of the low trough in Western Siberia,guiding the strong polar cold air to break out southward.This synoptic pattern is the primary cause of the occurrence of this severe dust storm.Additionally,the preceding period of high temperatures and low rainfall,coinciding with the spring planting season in northern Xinjiang,resulted in loose surface soil,providing favorable underlying surface conditions for the dust storm.(2)The horizontal shift in wind direction within the boundary layer corresponded to the initiation,duration,and cessation of the dust storm.A vertical downward motion center of-0.40 m/s appeared within the boundary layer,and the dust storm emerged four hours later.(3)During the dust storm,the lidar extinction coefficient ranged from 1.0 to 6.0 km-¹,and the depolarization ratio was between 0.11 and 0.20.
