The Impact of New Energy Demonstration City Construction on Air Pollution

Abstract
Using panel data from 271 cities in China from 2006 to 2023,and employing a difference-in-differ-ences method,this study investigates the effects of the new energy model city policy on urban air pollution and its underlying mechanisms,utilizing the policy as a quasi-natural experiment.The results show that the new energy model city policy significantly suppresses urban air pollution,and this conclusion still holds after the robustness test;the heterogeneity results show that the air pollution control effect of the policy is more significant in small and medium-sized cities,central cities,and resource cities;the mechanism analysis reveals that the construction of new energy model cities mitigates air pollution by altering the incentives and constraints of local governments;The new energy model city policies show adverse spatial spillover effects on air pollution in surrounding areas,thereby im-proving air quality in neighboring regions.High-quality construction of new energy demonstration cities is an impor-tant initiative to address climate change,promote ecological civilization and achieve sustainable development,and provides a reference for promoting the transformation of urban energy structure.关键词
