Study of the Wall-to-Lumen Ratio in Fibers of Various Wild Plant Species

Abstract
This study analyzed the wall-to-lumen ratio in 216 fiber samples from four categories of Chinese plants—hardwood,softwoods,gramina-ceous species,and bast fibers—using cryo-sectioning and microstructural staining.Results demonstrated significantly lower ratios with minimal intra-sample variation in woody fibers:approximately 92%of hardwoods(47/51)exhibited ratios<1(Lonicera ruprechtiana latewood peaked at 1.26),while Lonicera 86%of softwoods(12/14)presented<1(Larix gmelimii latewood maximum:1.09).Conversely,graminaceous and bast fibers showed higher ratios with greater variability:approximately 91%of graminaceous samples(30/33)exceeded 1(Ferroca lamus strictus maximum:4.25),and approxi-mately 85%of bast fibers(100/118)were>1(Litsea coreana var.lanuginose peak:6.47).关键词
