Abstract
Objective:Oral massage is an intervention that gently stimulates oral muscles and nerves to improve coordination of sucking,swallowing,and breathing.This study aims to investigate the effect of oral massage on bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD)in very low birth weight infants.
Methods:A retrospective review was conducted of very low birth weight infants admitted to the Department of Neonatology,Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University,between January 2022 and January 2023.A total of ninety-two infants were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria,with 48 in the oral massage group and 44 in the non-oral massage group.Perinatal data,feeding status,use of pulmonary surfactant,duration of mechanical ventilation,and length of hospital stay were collected.Both univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed.
Results:Compared with the non-oral massage group,the oral massage group had a lower incidence of feeding intolerance,achieved oral feeding at an earlier age,and had a shorter hospital stay(all P<0.05).The incidence of BPD and moderate-to-severe BPD was significantly lower in the oral massage group,as was the duration of mechanical ventilation(all P<0.05).Oral massage reduced the risk of BPD,with a crude OR of 0.159(95%CI 0.048 to 0.525)and an adjusted OR of 0.099(95%CI 0.016 to 0.613).
Conclusion:Oral massage not only alleviates feeding difficulties and reduces feeding intolerance in very low birth weight infants but may also help decrease the incidence of BPD and improve clinical outcomes.This approach is worthy of clinical promotion.关键词
