Academy Construction and Maritime Territory Governance in Guangdong during the Ming and Qing Dynasties
摘要
Abstract
Guangdong is one of the most successful regions in ancient China where the frontier areas were smoothly integrated into the national territory.The success of frontier governance was manifested not only in administrative manage-ment,but more crucially in cultural assimilation.The promoting role of Guangdong academies in integrating the maritime frontier areas of Lingnan into the national territory is evident.In the construction of academies in Guangdong,the govern-ment and officials often played a leading role,making efforts to incorporate Lingnan society into the mainstream cultural circle of Confucianism.The local gentry and the public actively responded by making great efforts both mentally and physically in construction or donating money to support education.With the joint efforts of officials and civilians in estab-lishing the academies,during the Ming and Qing dynasties,the atmosphere of culture and education in Lingnan was greatly invigorated.关键词
