Abstract

With AlCl3 as a catalyst,the 1-decene oligomerization was carried out to prepare poly-α-olefin(PAO).The effects of different initiators and their dosages on the performance of PAO were investigated with methods including FTIR,1H NMR,and 13C NMR.The experimental results indicate that the addition of initiators can reduce the molecular weight,kinematic viscosity,and pour point of PAO.Methanol has the strongest ability as an initiator to regulate the performance and viscosity grade of PAO.The prepared PAO has a 100℃kinematic viscosity of 6.198 mm2/s,a viscosity index of 149,a pour point of-54℃,an open flash point of 224.2℃,and a viscosity grade of PAO6.Changes in the amount of initiator methanol can effectively alter the performance and viscosity grade of PAO.The larger molar ratio of methanol/AlCl3 comes with lighter and more transparent color of PAO obtained by polymerization.The 1-decene oligomerization is catalyzed by the initiator through synergism with AlCl3.The mechanism of cationic polymerization reaction is followed.The product distribution is changed by altering the dominant chain reaction pathways.The product performance,such as viscosity and pour point,is thus regulated.
