Research progress on performance improvement technology of recycled coarse aggregate

Abstract
With a rapid pace of urbanization in China,large volumes of construction and demolition waste are generated during the renovation of old buildings and infrastructure.Recycling such waste into recycled coarse aggregate is considered an effective solution with notable economic and environmental benefits.However,the presence of residual mortar and weak interfacial transition zones significantly impairs the mechanical properties and durability of concrete incorporating recycled coarse aggregate.To enhance its performance and facilitate broader engineering applications,a range of physical and chemical modification techniques have been proposed.This paper provides a comprehensive review and comparison of these modification methods,focusing on their effects on aggregate quality as well as the mechanical and long-term performance of concrete.Mechanical grinding and microwave heating demonstrate high modification efficiency and strength improvement but are limited by high energy consumption or cost.Acid soaking offers a lower-cost solution but may reduce durability.Polymer impregnation improves long-term performance,though its effect on strength is limited.Coating and microbial-induced treatments yield substantial performance gains but involve complex procedures.Nano-silica soaking combines efficiency and cost-effectiveness,making it suitable for industrial-scale applications.Carbonation treatment not only enhances aggregate properties but also contributes to carbon sequestration,offering a sustainable option for low-carbon construction.Despite these advances at the material level,there remains a lack of systematic understanding of how modified recycled coarse aggregate affects the structural performance of concrete.Future research should focus on the mechanical behavior and durability of concrete at the structural scale,providing theoretical and technical support for its wider adoption in engineering practice.关键词
