A New Exploration of the Chu Origins,Shamanistic Rituals,and Cultural Significance of Qu Yuan's Tall Hat
摘要
Abstract
The connotation of Qu Yuan's poetic line"With towering height my hat I donned"has been commonly misinterpreted as a symbol of"self-purification"based on Wang Yi's annotation suggesting"distinction from the multitude".However,historical commentaries and visual representations have either overlooked or misconstrued its true significance.Examining the symbolic logic of sartorial codes in Chu culture reveals that Qu Yuan's tall hat was actually a characteristic headpiece widely worn by Chu nobility,most likely resembling the"Xiezhi crown"rather than representing individualistic expression.Functioning as a ritual implement for celestial communication in shamanistic practices,the hat's towering form(described as"towering high")embodies a cosmological conduit,complementing aromatic herbs as ceremonial instruments for Qu Yuan's self-cultivation and divination.Furthermore,the hat's ethnic and status manifest Qu Yuan's aristocratic ethos of unyielding integrity and loyalty to Chu,subtly presaging the inevitable resolution of his shamanistic dilemma.关键词
