Numerical simulation of heat transfer characteristics of flow with a shell-range built-in staggered baffles

Abstract

A staggered arrangement of baffles is proposed to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of shell-side air in the secondary cooling system of a composite quencher.Firstly,the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of the heat exchanger under the staggered baffle arrangement and the traditional segmental baffle arrangement were simulated and analyzed using Fluent software.It is found that the staggered baffle arrangement enables the shell-side fluid to form a spiral flow pattern;under the same pump power,the staggered baffle arrangement achieves a higher heat transfer rate,exhibits better energy-saving effects,and has better comprehensive performance than the traditional segmental baffle arrangement.Meanwhile,the influence law of different staggered baffle arrangements(including spacing,angle β,and notch rate h*)on the enhanced heat transfer of the quencher's shell side was further analyzed.The results show that under different arrangement spacing conditions,the S2 arrangement(where baffle spacing increases uniformly along the flow direction)has the optimal comprehensive heat transfer performance.With the increase of the stagger angle β,the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate first increase and then decrease;compared with β=180°,the heat transfer rate increases by about 5.8%when β=120°,showing the best comprehensive performance.As the notch rate h* increases,the pressure drop variation decreases,while the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate decrease;compared with h*=0.25,the heat transfer rate increases by about 6.9%when h*=0.45.The research results can provide a basis for the performance optimization and engineering application of quenchers.
