Abstract
As a distinctive form of artistic expression, illustrations of Ming and Qing novels are rich in cultural connotations and emotional implications.Beyond the primary aesthetic feature, they also serve to supplement textual content and convey cultural connotations, and the bodily expression becomes the key "strategic path" for Ming and Qing novels illustrations to realize these functions. In view of this, taking the bodily portraits of the characters in the illustrations of Ming and Qing novels as the research object, the practical analysis of the bodily expression is conducted in three levels of bodily behavior, bodily metaphor and bodily construction. In this regard, bodily expression is closely intertwined with gender allegory, hierarchical ritual order, and social customs, and the body is thus become a "literary symbol" and "narrative marker" with great interpretive value. The bodily expression in illustration narratives is also constructed by visual strategies such as line modeling, compositional design, and manipulation of reality and virtuality to create a symbolic space with both artistic aesthetic value and profound cultural connotation. Therefore,a close examination and interpretation of bodily expression of the illustration narrative in Ming and Qing novels opens a new perspective for appreciating the aesthetic and cultural value of Ming and Qing novels.关键词
