Abstract

Conventional grid-following inverters in renewable-powered systems lack the capability to support grid frequency,posing a risk of frequency collapse in these electric power systems as the penetration of renewable energy generation grows.To mitigate the adverse impact of renewable energy grid-connected equipment on system frequency stability,many grid-following control optimization solutions and grid-forming control strategies have been proposed and studied extensively.This paper begins by analyzing the frequency stability challenges faced by electric power systems and examining the frequency disturbance characteristics of renewable energy generation.It then compares and summarizes the grid frequency support characteristics of grid-following and grid-forming inverters,highlighting key points for achieving grid frequency support.Building on these insights,an improved grid-forming inverter control strategy is proposed.Without mimicking the characteristics of traditional synchronous motors,this control strategy features fast active power response and enhanced active power frequency support.Final simulations demonstrate that the proposed control strategy enhances frequency support by increasing the active power response to grid frequency changes.These results also confirm the correctness of the preceding analysis on the frequency disturbance characteristics of grid-connected inverters.
