Abstract

During the welding process,various regions within the heat-affected zone(HAZ)undergo different thermal cycles,resulting in significant microstructural changes,making the HAZ the weakest area of the welded joint.Currently,most research focuses on the precise characterization and understanding of the distribution patterns of strength and tough-ness in different characteristic regions of girth welds,while there is relatively little focus on the HAZ width.This study is based on the fully automated welding process of D1219×22 X80 pipeline steel,wherein a finite element model(FEM)of the pipeline girth welds was developed.A heat source subroutine was written to incorporate both single and dual torch welding processes.The birth-death element method was employed to simulate the welding process of different layers.The thermal cycle curves were studied and analyzed,and the results were compared with actual welding experiments to verify the model's accuracy.By adjusting the welding current to regulate heat input,the temperature range associated with the width of the HAZ was determined,the width of the HAZ was measured for each weld layer under different heat inputs,and the varia-tion trend was observed:the width of the HAZ increased approximately linearly with increasing heat input.Therefore,it is necessary to choose the appropriate size of welding heat input during the welding process of pipeline girth welds.Based on the measured HAZ widths of each weld layer under various heat inputs,a predictive model for the HAZ width was estab-lished and validated.The relative error between the experimental measurements and the predicted values from the model was less than 20%,confirming the reliability of the predictive model and providing valuable reference data for actual welding processes.
