Research on Multiscale Material Selection Criteria for Magnesium Oxide Insulation in Downhole High-power Electric Heaters

Abstract
To address the engineering challenges of significant variability in high-temperature insulation performance and the absence of quantitative criteria for material selection of electrical-grade magnesium oxide(MgO),10 industrial-grade samples were selected and examined.Comprehensive evaluations were employed to detect 10 core physicochemical properties,including chemical composition,particle size distribution,phase composition(analyzed by XRD),microstructure(examined by SEM),compaction density,flow rate,and magnetic substance content.Simultaneously,the insulation strength was tested across a temperature range of 100 ℃ to 650 ℃.Multidimensional correlation analysis revealed that magnetic substance content,Fe2O3,and carbon impurities are the primary determinants of high-temperature insulation performance.Compaction density emerged as a critical structural parameter influencing insulation strength,while high-temperature stability was governed by phase purity and the type and quantity of additives.It establishes a quantitative correlation among composition,structure,and electrical properties of the electrical-grade MgO based on systematic multi-grade testing data.These findings provide data-driven support and a theoretical foundation for material selection in high-temperature applications.关键词
