Abstract

The study on the effects of combined application of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar on dry matter accumula-tion and nitrogen use efficiency in maize-soybean intercropping systems is of great practical significance for achieving high and stable yields in maize-soybean intercropping.This study designed three planting patterns:maize monoculture(M),soybean monoculture(S),and maize-soybean intercropping(I),combined with three application gradients of nitrogen fer-tilizer(165 kg/hm2,210 kg/hm2,255 kg/hm2)and three application gradients of biochar(2 t/hm2,4 t/hm2,6 t/hm2).An orthogonal experimental design was adopted to explore the optimal combination of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar application under different planting patterns and their effects on crop dry matter accumulation and nitrogen use efficiency.The results showed that among the nine treat-ments combining nitrogen fertilizer and biochar applica-tion,the IN3C2 combination(maize-soybean intercropping with a nitrogen fertilizer application rate of 255 kg/hm2 and a biochar application rate of 4 t/hm2)demonstrated superior performance,achieving a combined maize-soybean yield of 13 395 kg/hm2.The IN3C2 treatment effectively alleviated the negative effects of intercropping on dry matter accumulation and nitrogen accumulation in maize.Although the dry matter ac-cumulation in maize under intercropping mode was significantly lower than that under monoculture mode,the nitrogen accu-mulation per plant in maize was significantly increased by 42.42%compared with monoculture(P<0.05),highlighting the advantage of nitrogen absorption capacity.In conclusion,the combined application of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar can pro-mote nitrogen accumulation in intercropped maize plants,improve nitrogen use efficiency,and achieve the goal of nitrogen reduction and efficiency enhancement.
