Angel Island Immigration Station from the Perspective of Foucault's Heterotopia Theory:Racial Spatial Segregation and the Resistance Practices of Chinese Immigrants
摘要
Abstract
Since the second half of the 19th century,Chinese immigrants have made significant contributions to the development of the United States. However, the internal anti-Chinese sentiment in the U.S.has gradually intensified over time. The enactment of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 not only marked the formal legal restriction of Chinese immigration by the U.S.government but also represented the official establishment of a series of spatial segregation and social control measures targeting Chinese immigrants.Against this backdrop,Angel Island Immigration Station became a key checkpoint for Chinese immigrants entering the United States.Foucault's concept of heterotopia provides a unique analytical perspective for understanding this special space of Angel Island Immigration Station. As a heterotopia,Angel Island Immigration Station disciplined Chinese immigrants through physical space and entry qualification checks, viewing them as"others".At the same time,it embodied complex temporal and spatial dimensions:it was both a prison that oppressed people and a starting point for Chinese immigrants pursuing the American Dream.Studying Angel Island Immigration Station from the perspective of heterotopia helps to understand the racial discrimination faced by Chinese Americans today.关键词
