Survey of depression and anxiety among caregivers of preterm and term infants:a community-based cross-sectional study

Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among caregivers of preterm and term infants.Methods We conducted a questionnaire survey among caregivers of infants aged 6-24 months from 4 health service centers in Pudong New Area,Shanghai.The Edinburgh postnatal depression scale(EPDS),maternal separation anxiety scale(MSAS),multidimensional scale of perceived social support(MSPSS),and satisfaction with life scale(SWLS)were used.Data were presented as median(interquartile range).The relevant data were statistically analyzed.Results A total of 227 valid questionnaires were collected,including 60 caregivers in the preterm group and 167 in the term group.The EPDS score of the preterm group was significantly higher than that of the term group,[7.0(8.0)vs 5.0(9.0);P<0.05].Caregivers with EPDS scores≥13 accounted for 35.0%and 19.2%in the preterm group and term group,respectively,with significant differences(P<0.05).On the MSAS,the preterm group demonstrated significantly higher total scores[50.5(42.7)vs 22.5(5.0)]and work-related separation anxiety scores[16.5(9.0)vs 6.7(1.7)]compared to the term group(both P<0.001).Both MSPSS and SWLS scores were significantly lower in the preterm group than in the term group(both P<0.001).Furthermore,caregivers with EPDS scores≥13 had significantly lower MSPSS and SWLS scores than those with EPDS scores<13(both P<0.001).Conclusion Caregivers of preterm infants demonstrate significantly higher levels of psychological distress,particularly anxiety and depression.These elevated depression scores show significant negative correlations with perceived social support and life satisfaction.关键词
