摘要

Abstract

[Purpose]The accuracy of existing drought monitoring models remains limited when applied to the region's cloudy and foggy areas.Therefore,it is crucial to use remote sensing technology to accurately monitor and assess drought conditions in the Sichuan Basin in order to enhance disaster prevention capabilities and reduce disaster losses.[Method]To achieve the research objectives,this study selected Aqua moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS)data from July to September of each year between 2014 and 2023.This data was used to calculate a vegetation temperature condition index(VTCI)at 10-day intervals,and the drought conditions in the Sichuan Basin were analyzed quantitatively based on drought categories and frequency statistical results.In addition,to quantitatively analyze drought variations during critical drought periods across the study area,the research region was divided into three sub-regions from west to east:the Chengdu Plain,the Central Hilly,and the East Ridge Valley.Frequency distributions of the VTCI were statistically calculated for the entire study area and each individual sub-region.Finally,the correlation analysis between cumulative precipitation and VTCI was used to verify the reliability of VTCI for drought monitoring.[Result](1)Compared with 2014,the study area experienced droughts with longer duration,wider coverage and more severe intensity from July to September in 2022,especially in August.(2)Drought in the Sichuan Basin showed obvious spatial heterogeneity.Compared with the Chengdu Plain,the Central Hilly and the East Ridge Valley were more prone to frequent and prolonged droughts.(3)VTCI showed a strong correlation with cumulative precipitation at different time scales,with the strongest correlation when the time scale of cumulative precipitation was one month.[Conclusion]Under the backdrop of climate change,drought risks in the Sichuan Basin have escalated.Severe drought occurred in the basin from July to September 2022,with drought conditions intensifying in August.Regional variations in terrain and precipitation patterns significantly influence drought evolution,necessitating differentiated categories for drought early warning and agricultural management tailored to sub-regional characteristics.VTCI is recognized as a reliable index for drought monitoring and assessment.
