Study on energy calibration and detection performance of wide-range NaI(Tl)detectors

Abstract
With the widespread application of nuclear technology,NaI(Tl)detectors are being increasingly used in fields such as environmental monitoring,nuclear accident monitoring,nuclear security,and neutron activation analysis.The accuracy of energy calibration for NaI(Tl)detectors is particularly crucial for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of their results.In traditional methods,research on energy calibration and detection performance of NaI(Tl)detectors mainly focuses on the energy range below 3 MeV,with relatively few studies on energy calibration and detection performance in the energy range above 3 MeV.For calibration in the high-energy range,current methods mainly rely on neutron accelerators,239Pu-C neutron sources,etc.,but these methods cannot yet meet the actual needs in neutron activation analysis.In this study,based on the"cascade coincidence summing effect"of radioactive sources,energy calibration research was conducted on a wide-range NaI(Tl)detector covering 35 keV to 6 MeV.Meanwhile,through laboratory experiments,the variation patterns of detection efficiency,energy resolution,and background counts of the wide-range NaI(Tl)detector with the measurement range were analyzed.The results show that the"cascade coincidence summing effect"can be applied to the calibration of NaI(Tl)detectors within 6 MeV,with the maximum relative deviation of the calibration results being 5.3%.As the measurement range of the detector increases,the detection efficiency of the wide-range NaI(Tl)detector changes slightly.The energy resolution of 137Cs at 661.2 keV increases from 6.6%to 7.2%,while the energy resolution of 208Tl at 2 614.51 keV remains unchanged.The background counts gradually decrease with the increase of the measurement range of the wide-range NaI(Tl)detector,while the count rate in the energy range above 3 MeV gradually increases as the detector's range expands.The experimental results indicate that the"cascade coincidence summing effect"can effectively achieve energy calibration of wide-range NaI(Tl)detectors in the energy range above 3 MeV.Laboratory experiments show that the detection performance of NaI(Tl)detectors is relatively less affected by the changes in the measurement range.This research can provide effective technical support for technicians in nuclear accident monitoring and neutron activation analysis research.关键词
