Changes in Hydrological Connectivity and Spatial Evolution of the Liaohe River Estuary Wetland,1985-2020

Abstract
Hydrological connectivity is an important indicator of wetland ecosystem stability.Examining changes in the hydrological connectivity of Liaohe River estuary wetland is critical for maintaining eco-logical functions,internal energy flows and material circulation in the wetlands.In this study,we analyzed the spatio-temporal dynamics of hydrological connectivity in the wetland from 1985 to 2020.The analysis combined the integral connectivity index(IIC),the possible connectivity index(IPC),and the dominant patch contribution(DPC)index with the morphological spatial pattern analysis(MSPA)model.We also identified critical areas and explored the spatial distribution of hydrological connections.The study was based on remote sensing image data of the study area at 5-yr intervals(1985,1990,1995,2000,2005,2010,2015 and 2020)to delineate landscape types and examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of the Liao-he estuary wetland.The IIC and IPC fluctuated around 0.1 during 1985-2020,decreasing initially and then increasing.The hydrological connectivity of Liaohe estuary wetland remained low and unstable during the period.MSPA modeling showed that the wetland landscape changed dramatically during the study pe-riod,and that the core area dominated overall hydrological connectivity.Hydrological connectivity in both the core area and overall wetland initially decreased and then increased.During the 1985-2010 period of degradation,estuary wetlands were converted to other types of land use.The wetland core area decreased,landscape fragmentation intensified,and hydrological connectivity diminished.Conversely,during the 2010-2020 recovery phase,non-wetland landscapes were converted back to wetlands,the core area of the wetland increased,and hydrological connectivity was restored.The areas with high hydrological connec-tivity were primarily located in offshore tidal flats and the main tidal trench.These two features are impor-tant for maintaining the hydrological connectivity of Liaohe estuary wetland and must be prioritized for optimal management.This study provides guidance for maintaining wetland ecosystem functions in the Liaohe estuary and theoretical support for wetland protection.关键词
