Distribution and Evaluation of Carbon,Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Surface Sediments of the Nearshore Waters of East Guangdong Province

Abstract

In this study,we explored the distribution and pollution status of total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN),and total phosphorus(TP)in surface sediments of the estuaries and nearshore waters of eastern Guangdong Province,aiming to provide a scientific basis for pollution reduction and environ-mental protection.In 2020 and 2021,surface sediment samples(0-5 cm)were collected at 114 stations for the determination of TOC,TN and TP and analysis of their correlations.The Nemero comprehensive pol-lution index and ecotoxicological methods were used to evaluate the pollution status.We also explored sources of organic matter to surface sediments and the changes in TOC,TN and TP content over the past 15 years.The contents of TOC,TN and TP in surface sediments were in the ranges of 0.05%-1.36%,0.006%-0.210%and 0.015%-0.112%,respectively.The distribution of TOC,TN and TP presented spa-tial heterogeneity,higher within bays and river estuaries than in other near-coastal areas,and gradually de-creasing with distance from the shore.In the study area,34.2%of the stations were classified as clean or above,65.8%of the stations were at levels of slight to moderate pollution,71.9%of the area was severely polluted by TN,meeting Class Ⅱ pollution standards,and 28.1%of the area was polluted by TOC and TP,categorized as Class Ⅰ pollution.The organic matter sources in the surface sediments of the study area were primarily marine-derived,as indicated by C/N ratios,with significant correlations among the ele-ments.Compared to historical data from the past 15 years,TOC and TN concentrations in the local area have decreased,while TP levels have increased.The C/N ratio has risen above 8,suggesting a shift to-ward mixed marine-terrestrial organic matter inputs.
