A Textual Criticism on"Peng Yue Maintained Neutrality,Sometimes Aligning with Han and Sometimes with Chu"

Abstract
The biographies of Tian Dan in Historical Records and the Book of Han both record that"Peng Yue maintained neutrality,sometimes aligning with Han and sometimes with Chu".This study contends that the historical record contains an inaccuracy regarding Peng Yue's neutrality and Peng Yue's neutrality was not directed toward Xiang Yu,the King of Chu,but rather toward the State of Qi,that is,the original text should be emended to read:"Peng Yue maintained neutrality,sometimes aligning with Han and sometimes with Qi".The following is a detailed analysis and evidence.The Chinese characters"Qi"(齐)and"Chu"(楚)share similar graphical structures,making them easily miswritten.From the textual and eventful logic,this sentence follows Tian Heng's defection to Peng Yue,suggesting it explains Peng's decision to shelter Tian and Peng's partial allegiance to Qi("alternately supporting Qi")directly motivated Tian to seek his protection after military defeat.From the relationship between the states,Liu Bang and Qi had no conflict of interest for a long time with a common enemy,Xiang Yu,which is why Peng Yue can maintain neutrality between Han and Qi.From a practical perspective,Peng Yue and Qi had a common need to resist Chu.关键词
