Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of pruning,irrigation,and fertilization on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Populus cathayana × canadensis 'Xin Lin 1',in order to provide a theoretical basis for cultivating high-quality poplar timber resources in Northeast China.Taking 7-year-old P.cathayana × canadensis 'Xin Lin 1' as the research object,different levels of pruning,irrigation,and fertilization coupling treatments were set up to measure the growth and photosynthetic characteristics indi-cators of the experimental forest.The effects of different treatments on the growth and photosynthesis of the forest were analyzed,and a comprehensive evaluation was conducted using the Bregin multi-trait com-prehensive evaluation method.The results showed that under different treatments,the differences in vari-ous traits of P.cathayana ×canadensis 'Xin Lin 1' reached a highly significant level(P<0.01);The vari-ation of phenotypic coefficient of each index ranged from 7.87%to 65.74%;The range of repetitive force of each index is 0.73-0.98.The results of multiple comparative analysis show that 35%pruning and irri-gation can significantly increase the tree height growth rate,diameter at breast height(DBH)growth rate,volume growth rate,net photosynthetic rate,and stomatal conductance;The fertilization level of 1 200 g compound fertilizer per plant can significantly increase the tree height growth rate,DBH growth rate,vol-ume growth rate,net photosynthetic rate and instantaneous water use efficiency;The fertilization level of 600 g compound fertilizer per plant can significantly improve the DBH growth rate,volume growth rate and net photosynthetic rate.Among all treatments,under the treatment of L-2-1(35%pruning,1 200 g com-pound fertilizer/plant,with irrigation),the tree height growth rate,volume growth rate,net photosynthetic rate,transpiration rate,and mean stomatal conductance were the highest,and except for transpiration rate,they were significantly higher than the N-0-0(CK)treatment;Under the treatment of L-1-1(35%prun-ing,600 g compound fertilizer/plant,with irrigation),the growth rate of DBH and instantaneous water use efficiency were the highest,and both were significantly higher than those of N-0-0(CK)treatment.The correlation analysis results show that there is a highly significant positive correlation level between various growth traits;There is a highly significant positive correlation between net photosynthetic rate and growth traits.The comprehensive evaluation of each treatment was conducted using growth traits,photosynthetic characteristics,and combined growth and photosynthetic characteristics as evaluation indicators.It was found that Q,values were highest in the L-2-1(35%pruning,1 200 g compound fertilizer/plant,with irri-gation)treatment.Pruning and water and fertilizer nurturing measures significantly affect the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of trees.The treatment plan of 35%pruning,1 200 g compound fertilizer per plant,and irrigation can promote the growth of P.cathayana × canadensis 'Xin Lin 1' stand,improve the photosynthetic characteristics of the tree,and achieve the best comprehensive improvement effect on its growth and photosynthetic characteristics.
