Epidemiological Investigation on Equine Piroplasmosis in Qingpu District of Shanghai City

Abstract
In order to investigate the prevalence of equine piroplasmosis(EP)in Qingpu District,Shanghai City,serum samples were collected from 185 horses in 9 equestrian facilities across the region from March to April 2024 to detect antibody against the disease using ELISA.In June 2024,whole blood samples were collected from seropositive horses to detect pathogens of nucleic acid using real-time fluorescence PCR.The results showed that the overall seroprevalence against the disease was 15.14%(28/185),specifically,10.81%(20/185)against Theileria equi(T.equi),6.49%(12/185)against Babesia caballi(B.caballi),and 2.16%(4/185)against co-infection with the two pathogens;7/20 T.equi and 1/12 B.caballi seropositive horses were detected,nucleic acid of the two pathogens were detected simultaneously from one sample,but no clinical symptoms of the disease were detected from all sampled horses.In conclusion,EP pathogenies exist in Qingpu District,Shanghai City,dominated by T.equi,and supplemented by B.caballi,and high risk of infection was available in the horses for leisure/enjoyment or racing,adult horses and stallions.It was recommended to eradicate EP through mandatory pre-movement testing for all introduced horses,intensively monitoring the disease,and reducing potential risk of exposure to ticks.Critical baseline data was provided by the investigation for evidence-based control strategies and healthy development of equine industry in the region.关键词
