Textual research on Limonitum in Chinese materia medica
摘要
Abstract
The Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China records Limonitum and explicitly defines it as the hydroxide mineral Limonitum.From a historical development perspective,the understanding of Limonitum source material evolved from a diverse state during the Han and Jin dynasties,where it was ambiguously referred to as both a mineral and a plant,to the establishment of its mineral-based origin during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Concurrently,factors such as regional differences in medicinal usage practices led to the confusion and interchangeability of Limonitum with herbs like Smilax glabra Roxb,Ophiopogon japonicus,Polygonatum sibiricum,and Carex kobomugi seeds,resulting in the phenomenon of synonymous names for distinct substances.This paper provides a comprehensive review of Limonitum in terms of its nomenclature,origin,traceability of the phenomenon of shared names for different substances,production areas,harvesting and processing methods,and efficacy.Textual research reveals that the name"Yu Yu Liang"embodies the"Surplus Grain"conceptual framework in traditional Chinese medicine.Historically,its source materials were documented under mineral names such as Tai Yi Yu Yu Liang,Yu Yu Liang,and Shi Zhong Huang Zi,while two botanical species were also classified under the same medicinal entry.Early records of Limonitum production areas were relatively vague,but by the Song Dynasty,it was largely established to be primarily produced in Shandong,Jiangsu,Zhejiang,Shanxi,and Henan provinces.As a mineral-based medicine,Limonitum can be harvested year-round.Processing methods include grinding and purification,as well as calcining with vinegar quenching,and preparation with black beans or Polygonatum rhizome.Historically,the primary efficacy of Limonitum included:treating blood stasis and abdominal masses,stopping abnormal uterine bleeding,resolving cold-heat imbalances,fullness,rebellious cough,and pathogenic damage.In contrast,modern pharmacopeias have streamlined its described efficacy and abandoned claims of"lightening the body and prolonging life".This study not only fills the academic gap in the herbal textual research of Limonitum,clarifying its evolutionary trajectory from the Han and Jin dynasties to the present,but also aims to resolve the confusion caused by regional aliases and morphological similarities,ensuring the efficacy and safety of Limonitum.关键词
