Trade-offs and Synergistic Effects in Ecosystem Services of Coastal Zone in Guangdong Province and Their Influencing Factors

Abstract

[Objective]The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamics of coastal ecosystem services and their driving factors,and offer scientific guidance for safeguarding regional ecological security and fostering harmonized human-nature development.[Method]Based on the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach(CASA)and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)models,four key coastal ecosystem services in Guangdong Province,named carbon sequestration,water conservation,habitat quality,and soil retention,were evaluated.The trade-offs and synergies among these services were analyzed using correlation coefficient analysis.Incorporating 16 natural conditions and human activity factors,the optimal parameters-based geographical detector model was applied to identify the dominant driving factors of their spatial heterogeneity.[Results and Conclusion]From 2000 to 2020,the annual average values of coastal ecosystem services in Guangdong Province exhibited divergent trends:carbon sequestration service decreased from 883.16 to 866.86 g·m-2,water conservation declined from 760.55 to 646.62 mm,and habitat quality dropped from 0.47 to 0.40.In contrast,soil retention service showed a modest upward trend.Spatially,the ecosystem services demonstrated a distinct"core-periphery"gradient pattern.Synergistic relationships among coastal ecosystem services in Guangdong Province showed significant divergence:the synergy between carbon sequestration and habitat quality weakened from 0.590 to 0.490,and that between carbon sequestration and soil retention decreased from 0.660 to 0.600.Conversely,the relationship between water conservation and carbon sequestration shifted from a trade-off(-0.091)to synergy(0.031),and that between water conservation and soil retention transitioned from-0.071 to 0.062.Spatially,trade-offs among multiple services were notably observed in the peripheral zones of urban clusters.Vegetation,climate,and landscape patterns emerged as dominant drivers of spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem services.Multi-factor interactions exhibited pronounced nonlinear enhancement effects,particularly through the coupling of vegetation with topographic or edaphic factors.
