Abstract

Soil compaction is a major cause of urban grassland degradation.Understanding the compaction status of urban grasslands under different management practices is essential for their effective management.In the Yangling Demonstration Zone,Shaanxi Province,two types of urban grasslands with different management practices(campus artificial lawn and near-natural grassland)were selected for this study.Traditional statistical and geostatistical methods were employed to analyze the current state of soil compaction within the 0-30 cm soil layer,as well as its spatial distribution characteristics.The results showed that soil compaction in both the campus artificial lawn and near-natural grassland increased with soil depth.The average soil compaction in the near-natural grassland(4.72 MPa)was significantly higher than that in the campus artificial lawn(1.64 MPa).Most soil layers in both types of grassland exhibited moderate spatial autocorrelation.The maximum sampling distances for measuring soil compaction in the campus artificial lawn and near-natural grassland were 2.7 and 2.5 m,respectively.The distribution of soil compaction in the campus artificial lawn was relatively uniform,with no significant compaction observed.In contrast,the central area of the near-natural grassland exhibited notable compaction,which intensified with increasing depth.In comparison to the artificial lawn,the near-natural grassland requires improved management to reduce its soil compaction levels.
