Abstract

This study investigates changes in groundwater levels and resources within the Beijing Plain over the past two decades using multiple research methods.Key findings demonstrate significant impacts following the South-to-North Water Diversion Project:Groundwater levels recovered substantially,with the Yongding River system showing rises of 19.45 m(unconfined aquifer)and 23.16 m(confined aquifer),while the Chaobai River system experienced a cumulative rise exceeding 30 m.From 2015 to 2024,total groundwater storage increased by 64.11×108 m³,averaging 6.41×108 m³ annually.This storage variation resulted from altered recharge and discharge components.Recharge increased by 2.6×108 m³/a compared to the 2000-2014 period.Concurrently,groundwater levels in the Yongding River system rose by 19.45 m in phreatic wells and by 23.16 m in confined wells,while the Chaobai River system experienced a cumulative rise of over 30 m.In terms of groundwater resources,from 2015 to 2024,the total change in groundwater storage in the plain increased 64.11×108 m3,with an average annual increase of 6.41×108 m3.The variation in groundwater storage was influenced by both recharge and discharge.For recharge,the period from 2015 to 2024 saw an increase of 2.6×108 m3/a compared to 2000-2014.From 2017 to 2022,the cumulative ecological replenishment reached 10.42×108 m3,while groundwater extraction decreased from 19.6×108 m3 in 2014 to 12.44×108 m3 in 2023.
