Abstract

Group train operation mode offers a new approach to improving the carrying capacity of heavy-haul railways by increasing traffic density.Group train plan is the foundation of train transportation organization under group train operation mode.By focusing on the optimization of unit trains grouping/de-grouping at multiple stations and multiple group trains operation,an optimization method was proposed to optimize unit trains grouping/de-grouping stations,scale,and order,while considering railway network traffic allocation.First,the traffic flow characteristics and unit train grouping/de-grouping operation scenarios of heavy-haul railway networks were analyzed.Then,the operation time characteristics under four scenarios—unit trains single-station grouping,multi-station grouping,group trains partial de-grouping,and complete de-grouping—were examined.Based on such work,a group train planning model was constructed,which aimed to minimize the total transport time of non-group unit trains and group trains,subject to constraints such as traffic flow conservation,the number of unit train grouping/de-grouping operations within a group,uniqueness of grouping/de-grouping,loading and unloading capacity,and the passing capacity of stations and line sections.A genetic algorithm with a penalty function was designed for solutions based on the specific characteristics of the model by introducing penalty variables into the objective function to incorporate certain constraints.Finally,a simplified example was constructed based on a heavy-haul railway in China to analyze the validity of the model and algorithm.The solution results show that the transport time of heavy-haul railways running group trains reduces by 43.8%compared to the actual transportation mode and the solved group plan adequately satisfies the demands of cargo transportation and railway network transportation capacity resources,effectively improving the cargo transportation efficiency of heavy-haul railways.The group train planning method can realize unit trains and group trains grouping/de-grouping at multiple stations and provide a reference for further optimizing the train transportation organization under group train operation mode.
